In the heart of the Hickory Nut Gorge, the town of Lake Lure has become a destination for visitors and second-home buyers charmed by its beauty. With just over 1,000 permanent residents, Lake Lure is located in Rutherford County about 28 miles southeast of Asheville via U.S. 74A.

Formed by the Rocky Broad River, which winds through the Hickory Nut Gorge, the 720 acre Lake Lure has been recognized as one of the most beautiful man-made lakes in the world by National Geographic. The town is a tourist destination growing from 1000 to 10000 residents in the summer months. The swimming beach is open Memorial Day through Labor Day and is staffed with lifeguards. The beach also includes a water park and picnic area. You can rent boars, canoes, kayaks and paddleboats at Lake Lure Marina. Boating permits are required for motorized boats.

Also known as Fairfield Mountains, the Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure is named after the 2,800 foot peak at the north side of the Lake. The resort offers two 18-hole golf courses; Apple Valley Course (a championship course) and the Bald Mountain Course that have been rated four stars by Gold Digest. The Bald Mountain course, designed in 1968, is named for the rock-faced cliffs that loom over the course. The newer Apple Valley course was designed by Dan Maples. Guests can rent Lake Lure homes, condominiums and villas for vacation.

Rumbling Bald Resort also has three swimming pool complexes (one indoor), a beach, a marina on the lake, tennis, mini-golf, a Wellness Center with spa and salon, and even its own video store. There are three onsite restaurants – all open to the public.

Of course, those who’d rather own a place at Rumbling Bald Resort can can certainly do so. Both new construction and resale homes are available. Those who prefer to build can choose from a wide variety of available lots
